This profile of a nutrition educator with University of Missouri Extension's Family Nutrition Education Program (FNEP) is part of an on-going series designed to educate the public about the wide range of program expertise that exists through extension in southwest Missouri.

Relevant past employment: K-12 Substitute Teacher, Neosho RV School District, Neosho Missouri

Responsibilities: Implement lesson plans while ensuring the integrity of academic time; motivate students to learn and participate; maintain confidentiality of student and school personnel information; and complete substitute teacher activity reports.

What attracted you to working with MU Extension? “I liked the importance being placed on bringing community together and providing knowledge so individuals can make better choices,” said Julie Graue, nutrition program assistant.

What do you hope to accomplish by teaching nutrition education? “To use my knowledge, abilities, and skills so I can help individuals in my community understand the importance of nutrition,” said Graue.

Why do you think it is important to teach nutrition in school? “Children are more adaptable, willing to accept new ideas, and try new things. Children need to have a solid foundation and understanding of the importance of being healthy and making good choices. Proper nutrition and exercise can prevent many medical problems, allow children to perform their best, and reach their full potential,” said Graue.
