GALENA, Mo. -- University of Missouri Extension will be offering “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” an exercise program designed for older adults, starting Sept. 16 at the Cape Fair Community Center.

The first and last class last will run from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. to allow time for a brief orientation to the program and health assessments. The remaining classes start at 10 a.m. and last about an hour. Class dates include Sept. 16, 23, and 30, Oct. 7, 14, and 2, (No Class on October 28) and Nov. 4, 11, 18, and 25 and Dec. 2.

The program, developed by Tufts University, is designed to help older adults improve strength, flexibility and balance. The exercises are low-impact/low weight. All needed equipment is provided during the class.

“If you have been thinking about signing up for an exercise program this class is a great way for older adults to learn some basics and get develop a routine. Past participants reported that they noted a definite change in their strength, balance and flexibility,” said Renette Wardlow, University of Missouri Extension human development specialist and program coordinator.

The program is limited to 12 participants. The fee for the 10 session program is $25. The registration deadline is August 31. Some participants may have to obtain their physician’s permission before taking part in the class.
