LAMAR, Mo. – University of Missouri Extension is providing a guided grocery store tour in Lamar to help families buy healthy and affordable foods.
“Cooking Matters at the Store” is an interactive grocery store tour that teaches low-income families to shop for healthy, affordable food. Identical tours are planned from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both May 19 and June 9 at the Walmart Supercenter, 29 SW 1St Ln, Lamar.
Participants will learn to find whole grains, buy fruits and vegetables on a tight budget, compare unit prices, and read food label according to instructor Dr. Lydia Kaume, a nutrition and health education specialist with University of Missouri Extension.
Participants will learn to buy fruits and vegetables on a budget, compare unit prices to find bargains, how to read and compare food labels, ways to identify whole grains and sticking to a shopping budget.
After the tour participants will receive a $10 gift card to the grocery store, a workbook full of recipes and simple tips on buying healthy and low-cost foods, and a reusable grocery bag.
