13th Annual Lawrence County Extension “Twilight Horticulture Tour” is Aug. 9

MT. VERNON, Mo. -- University of Missouri Extension is conducting its annual “Lawrence County Twilight Horticulture Tour” from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at the University of Missouri Southwest Research Center, 14548 Highway H, Mt. Vernon.

Patrick Byers, a horticulture specialist with MU Extension and Eldon Cole, a livestock specialist with MU Extension, are hosting the event.

The 2013 Tour will focus on horticultural research and demonstration activities taking place at the MU Southwest Center. Tour stops will include the tomato high tunnel, a walk through the arboretum to discuss various tree species, the solar greenhouse and the native prairie to discuss techniques of prairie restoration.

Research is underway at the Southwest Center on the production of several fruits— elderberries, pawpaws, persimmons and grapes – and each will be highlighted during the tour.

For those with an interest in tomatoes, a commercial tomato production workshop will be conducted earlier in the day, from 5 p.m. to -6 p.m.

Pre-registration is not required for this free event. There will be some short distances to walk and lawn chairs are suggested for parts of the tour.
